We only provide driving instruction to prepare students for their South Australian Vehicle On Road Test (VORT). At this current time we do not offer CBT&A (logbook) instruction.
We accept cash payment, PayID or PayWave. Payment for lessons must be made in full and prior to each lesson commencing.
In South Australia you can obtain your driving licence by two methods; VORT (Vehicle On Road Test) and CBT&A (Competency Based Training and Assessment commonly known as Logbook).
VORT This method is typically the cheaper of the methods as you can achieve the required competency level to pass the driving examination with less lessons. Your driving instructor will teach you most of the same skills and competencies as taught in logbook so you are a safe and competent driver.
The VORT examination involves a final drive along a pre-determined Government route, where you will be required to demonstrate competent driving including five slow-speed manoeuvres:
1. Moving off from a kerb 2. U-Turn 3. Three-point turn 4. 90 degree angle park 5. Reverse parallel park
Things to note with VORT, students cannot be tested by an instructor they have had lessons with. This is something we arrange for all our students. Importantly, any road law breach while undertaking a VORT examination will result in an immediate fail of the test and require a reassessment, permitted only after 14 days.
CBT&A This method requires students to learn and demonstration 30 competencies with a final examination drive. Due to the number of competencies, more driving instruction lessons are required. At this time we do not offer CBT&A.
DIT Driver Training Industry Reform – August, 2024
Department for Infrastructure and Transport has announced (30 August, 2024) some key changes in the State Government’s proposed reforms, earmarked for implementation in around 2026. These include changes to the way learner drivers will be required to pass a practical driving test to obtain their provisional licence. These reforms focus on student and instructor safety and improving industry training, assessment and general standards, including the introduction of a Code of Conduct. More information on these proposed reforms is available at the following link:
Each student possesses distinct qualities and arrives with varying degrees of expertise and abilities. After evaluating your driving during your initial lesson, we can offer you a projection regarding the probable quantity of lessons required before undertaking the VORT examination.
At Detour Driving School we are flexible with pick up and drop off locations – they don’t need to be the same place, but will need to be mutually convenient. We can come to your home, school, workplace or other location. If you’re under 18 years of age for your safety and security we will require a parent or guardians permission to change your drop off location mid-lesson.
Commencing in 2024 we will be offering driving lessons periodically in Roxby Downs. Achieving a pass score for the VORT examination demands an aggregate of 90%. Lacking comprehension of the proper skills required could result in expensive failures. Enlisting professional guidance guarantees you’re provided accurate expertise in the many necessary skills and procedures, ensuring your qualification as a competent and self-assured driver.
You must have your learners permit with you for each lesson (hard copy or mySAGOV app), as well as your driving companion for recording your driving hours. We also recommend comfortable footwear (no slip-on/thong style footwear) as well as appropriate, comfortable clothing for driving. Feel free to bring a cool drink or a snack if you’re booking longer lessons. Comfort breaks can be taken at any time; you just need to ask!
